Kakes Studios Has It's Roots....
Once upon a time in Boulder (1969-1983), there ruled, "The Community Free School," where anyone could teach whatever they wanted. That was the 'free' part. Fourteen years later when the organization folded, four neighboring studios on Pearl St. were left in its wake, Kakes Studios being one of them.
Mamie Kakes, now owner of Boulder's Kakes Studios, was then one of the Community Free School's teachers of 'Motown Get Down,' Tap Dance and Rollerskating since 1975 and in 1983 was summoned by a fellow teacher to lease one of the remaining spaces so classes could continue uninterrupted.
Alas, Kakes Studios was born on April Fool's Day, 1983, and has been serving the Boulder community ever since with the sacred philosophy:
"Rent your own time slot...(keep it for years)
Do your own thing
Make your own money
Live creatively ever after!"
